The Break of Day
08.11.04 (5:39 am)
There's something about those precious moments before sunrise.

I never used to be a morning person. I always said mornings wouldn't be so bad if they started later. Ever the night owl, I'd stay awake till the wee hours and sleep till noon. Guess I needed to feel vampy and out of synch with the 'normal' world or something, I dunno.

Several years ago, I had the good fortune to live on the Gulf Coast in Texas. My window overlooked the Gulf facing southeast, and the sunrises were absolutely fantastic! It was an incredible treat to awaken just as a hint of color began to appear in the sky, and by the time the sun rose I was walking along the piers or on the beach.

This was a time of mystical and magical solitude, and I grew to cherish my morning pre-dawn walks. It was a time of transformation, of quietness, of celebrating my solitude and interdependence with all things.

There's a feeling in the air at that time of day. The world is still asleep, and the stillness is refreshing. Birds and animals begin to awaken and stir, but the air is not yet buzzing with the sound of human activity.

Ah, yes.

As I type this, light streaks the sky over the forest outside my window where I live now, and I am eternally grateful for the experience of these magical moments before sunrise.
